Before You Start Packing for a Yoga Retreat

Here are some things to consider as you create your own yoga retreat packing list:
What will you do at your retreat?
At a yoga retreat, you won’t actually spend all day long practicing yoga. Your specific daily schedule will depend on what type of retreat you choose.
Usually at a yoga retreat, you’ll typically take one to three yoga classes each day. You may spend the rest of the time participating in outdoor adventure activities like swimming, hiking, or even horseback riding.
You can also spend time relaxing, getting spa treatments, meditating, journaling, reading, or otherwise just taking care of yourself.
Each yoga retreat will provide you with a schedule of planned activities before you arrive.
Be sure to note anything on the schedule that will require a certain type of clothing—like a swimsuit for swimming or boots for hiking. If there will be an opening or closing ceremony, you’ll want to bring a special outfit.
Knowing what activities are planned will help you choose appropriate clothing for your retreat.
What’s provided at your retreat?
When you are considering yoga retreats, the yoga studios or retreat organizers will tell you what’s included.
Numerous yoga retreats include absolutely everything you might need; others expect you to bring certain things. This varies by retreat provider, so be sure to read your retreat information thoroughly before you start packing.
It’s a good idea to find out before you go if your yoga resort provides yoga mats, yoga blocks, or meditation cushions.
Where are you going?
The location of your yoga retreat will determine what you need to pack! What’s the average temperature at this time of year and what’s the weather forecast?
For example, if you’re going to a warm country bring flip flops, and if you’re going to a cold region, bring wool slippers!
If you’ll be in the mountains, you might want to bring lightweight vests, shawls, or scarves for early morning practice or evening stargazing.
Also consider the cultural norms at your location. If you’re traveling within the United States, you’ll be able to wear pretty much anything.
However, you plan to attend a retreat at an Ashram, you might need to wear loose clothing and cover your shoulders. If you will visit a temple, plan to wear a dress, or a skirt or dressy pants with a nice top—no yoga attire, athletic wear, or jeans.
If your retreat will be in a country with more conservative dress codes, plan to wear a long skirt or pants, as well as long sleeves, when you leave the retreat site.
What to Pack for a Yoga Retreat
Whether you’re going on a weekend or a week-long retreat, here’s what you need to know to create your own personal yoga retreat packing list!
Yoga Outfits and Clothing
At a yoga retreat, the focus is on comfortable clothing that lets you move and makes you feel good.
Choose comfortable yoga clothes in breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics.
Pack form-fitting yoga wear so your yoga instructor can observe your form and advise on adjustments that will improve your yoga practice.
You’ll want to pack:
Yoga clothing
- Yoga pants or leggings (one pair of yoga pants for every 2 days) — I like these fitted leggings and these bootcut yoga pants
- Yoga shorts (one pair for every 2 days) — these yoga shorts are so soft and stretchy
- Yoga tops (one for every 2 days) — I love how this one stays in place
- Sports bras or tank tops with built-in bras (one for every 2 days)
Essentials
- Regular bra (one)
- Underwear (one for each day plus 2 extras)
- Lightweight rain jacket and umbrella if the retreat is in a rainy location

- Comfortable pajamas
- Swimwear if there’s a pool, beach, or spa
- Sun hat and sunglasses

Casual clothes
How much casual clothing depends on how much time you’ll be in yoga gear and what other wellness activities you’ll be doing.

- Long-sleeved shirts for cool mornings and evenings
- Sweater or sweatshirt
- Comfortable pants for hiking or relaxing
- Cosy sweatpants
- Loose-fitting harem pants, perfect for meditation sessions

Footwear
- Flip-flops — my absolute favorite flip-flops I take everywhere.
- Sturdy sandals — I personally love Sanuks and Chacos
- Hiking boots or hiking shoes if hiking or a lot of walking is on your agenda.

Yoga Gear
As mentioned above, check with the retreat center you’ll be attending to see what equipment they provide and what equipment you must bring with you.
Yoga mats
Many retreat centers will provide yoga mats. However, many yogis strongly prefer to use their own yoga mat. Also, some retreat centers require people to use their own mat for hygiene reasons.
- This lightweight yoga mat is super thin, made of natural rubber, and can be folded. This lightweight mat is perfect if you’re flying to your retreat.
- This thick yoga mat is good for stability and sensitive joints. It’s perfect if you prefer more support from your mat.
Yoga Accessories
- Yoga mat bag — to transport your yoga mat, props, towel, water bottle, and journaling supplies from your room to the yoga space.
- Yoga mat carrier — if you just want to carry your mat, no extras.
- Yoga blocks and a yoga strap — especially if you typically use yoga props or are new to yoga
- Meditation cushion— if you’re not used to sitting on the floor.
- Yoga mat towel—essential if you’re in a tropical location, practicing dynamic yoga styles, or in a hot yoga studio.
- Mat wipes—Pack these essential oil mat wipes to clean your mat.

Mental Preparation
Packing for a yoga retreat requires more than just tossing your favorite yoga pants and mat into a bag. It’s about preparing for a holistic experience that nurtures both body and mind.
- Bring an open mind. Be ready to embrace new experiences and practices.
- Intention setting can begin before you even arrive at the retreat. Think about your goals and what you hope to achieve from the retreat.
- Leave the rest behind. Be ready to focus on yourself in the present at your yoga and meditation retreat.
How to Pack for a Yoga Retreat
Pack as lightly as possible so that you’re not weighed down by extra stuff!
I recommend packing a carry-on bag and taking a small, lightweight backpack as your personal item.
If you pack light, you’ll appreciate the simplicity of your available choices during your retreat. And you can use the small backpack as your daypack on hikes and cultural excursions.
Handwashing your clothes during your trip is probably a better option than overpacking!
